There are many local kinds of breads, which are made at home by the inhabitants and are the bases for breakfast, sandwiches and snacks. Breads are consumed with animal products, like eggs, milk, cheese and butter, but also with various stews from pork or beef meat. Some of the most popular snacks and appetizers are the plantain chips or plantain fries, which are easily and quickly made, using green plantains, vegetable oil for frying and salt – the chips are cut into paper-thin rounds, but the fries are cut in thicker pieces. Yams are also consumed as snacks, especially the yam and spinach croquettes, which also contain dried bread crumbs.
